How to Pass Any ATS System

Deep technical dive into the algorithms behind Taleo, Workday, and Lever.

Decoding the Parsing Algorithm

Most modern ATS systems (like Workday or Greenhouse) use Natural Language Processing (NLP) to understand your resume. They aren't just looking for words; they are looking for entities—specific relationships between dates, titles, and skills.

Optimization Score

Recruiters often search by "Skill + Years of Experience." Ensure your skills are listed near the corresponding job entry so the system can correctly attribute the duration of your experience.

Formatting for Speed

Use standard bullet points. Stylized symbols (arrows, stars) are often parsed as strange characters or spaces, which can break the sentences around them.

The "White Font" Myth

Never hide keywords in white font at the bottom of your resume. Modern ATS systems convert all text to a plain-text format for the recruiter to read. They will see your hidden keywords, and it will result in an immediate rejection for deception.

Entity Recognition

Use standard date formats (MM/YYYY) and traditional job titles. If your actual title was "Customer Success Wizard," use "Customer Success Manager" on your resume so the ATS recognizes your seniority and role correctly.
