Government Job Resume Mastery
Navigating the complex world of federal, state, and local government applications and selection criteria.
The "Selection Criteria" Barrier
Unlike private sector resumes, government applications often require a much longer document that explicitly addresses "Selection Criteria" or "Key Competencies." In the US Federal system (USAJOBS), a 5-page resume is actually standard.
Extreme Keyword Detail
Government recruiters use highly rigid checklists. If the job post mentions "Budget Oversight of $100k," you must use that exact phrase. Do not assume your title implies your skills.
Selection Criteria Responses
In Australia and the UK, government roles require a separate document. Use the SAO (Situation, Action, Outcome) method to write 250-word responses for every criterion.
USAJOBS Requirements
- Include your GS level if applicable.
- List hours worked per week for every previous job.
- Provide supervisor contact information and indicate if they can be contacted.
- Explicitly state your Citizenship and Veterans Preference status.
Pro Tip: Length is an Asset
In government hiring, being concise is less important than being thorough. Provide deep context for every achievement. If you managed a project, list the specific regulations you followed, the number of stakeholders involved, and the precise cost savings.
